Rachel Thomas: optimizing only for autonomous coding agents won't yield better collaborators

fast.ai co-founder Rachel Thomas argues the research community faces a choice: keep optimizing coding agents solely for leaderboards and you get better autonomous agents, but better collaborators won't emerge for free. Coding agents should augment complementary human strengths like initiative and judgment; human-centered interaction isn't a temporary workaround for immature models — it enables new forms of collaboration.
