1000Hz Torque RL Policy Beats MPC: DRL Is Viable for Precise Arm Control
ChongZzZhang · x · 2026-10-20
The author concludes that nothing stops DRL from doing precise control: in their comparison, a 1000Hz torque RL policy faced off against 1000Hz torque MPC, with the policy inferring faster while both ran in real time. Since RL handles uncertainty much better, the author argues it can replace explicit-model-based control even for fixed-base robot arms.
They add that Codex somewhat "cheated" by using dynamics directly for gradients (differentiable-RL style), but this is less of a cheat than MPC and still enables domain randomization.
