Researchers push back on AI slop papers: reject dense unreadable submissions outright

Jess Riedel received two journal review invitations in two days for obvious AI slop, with no review-decline option to say so and no way to contact editors. David Hadfield-Menell says he now writes reviews stating a paper is "dense unreadable slop" and recommends rejection on that basis alone. Riedel adds that the community can no longer extend benefit of the doubt to earnest but awkward authors — sifting a thousand slop papers for a diamond costs too much, and new trust mechanisms are needed.
