Anthropic commits ~20% of shares to new Public Benefit Fund, but critics call it nonbinding

Anthropic announced the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a wholly owned entity seeded with 5% of the company's shares. For every 50% increase in company value over a set baseline, up to an extra 2% can be contributed at board discretion — roughly 20% of shares committed to public good in total. The co-founders have pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and about half of employees donate equity via a matching program. Quoting the announcement, critic CharlesD353 notes the entity appears basically nonbinding: a wholly owned LLC holding shares means very little, as Anthropic can effectively shut it down, dissolve it, never externally grant the shares, or change how it operates at any time.
