Sam Altman Told Staff of Three AI Safety Endgames: Watchdog, Merged Labs, or Winner-Takes-All
Hesamation · x · 2026-10-20
Per reporting shared by Hesamation, Sam Altman told OpenAI employees last week about three industry-proposed endgames for AI safety:
- An international watchdog akin to the IAEA enforcing safety standards — the path Altman appeared to support;
- Merging all major labs into a single body to develop AI safely;
- One company achieving recursive self-improvement, becoming so powerful it could 'melt everyone else's GPUs' — an outcome he called 'terrible.'
The remarks came just as the Trump administration sets up its first system for policing 'superintelligence' developers like OpenAI.
