Soundbox: open-source local audio MCP server with 21 tools for agents
WeakTrifle3475 · reddit · 2026-10-20
Soundbox is an open-source (MIT) app that generates sound effects, music and speech locally with open-weight models, exposing 21 tools via an MCP server for agents. The author highlights design decisions useful to anyone building an MCP server:
- Attribution with no config: the initialize handshake's clientInfo tags every call and sound, so the app shows which client made what—no headers or API keys.
- Tools that wait: generate blocks until the WAV exists and returns its absolute path instead of a job id, so agents don't need to poll.
- Stateful scenes: createstory / addlines / speakstory / exportstory let agents build multi-track arrangements across turns; openinstudio hands off to the user.
- Observability: every call logged to an Agents page and GET /api/mcp/calls, exportable as OpenTelemetry traces.
- DNS-rebinding check with an allow-list for non-loopback hosts.
One-liner install: claude mcp add --transport http soundbox http://127.0.0.1:17494/mcp. HTTP transport plus stdio bridge; runs on Windows, macOS, or Docker.
