Benj Edwards coins "personal media": turning hummed voice memos into full songs with Suno
binarybits · x · 2026-10-20
Tech writer Benj Edwards publishes a piece at Understanding AI introducing "personal media" — AI-generated content with an audience of sometimes just one person. He recounts feeding hastily sung voice memos, recorded while clearing out his mother's house in 2024, into Suno 4.5 in mid-2025. His fragment "Nasty Rotten Rusty Moldy Trash" became a full 1970s psychedelic funk track with a saxophone line, and other unfinished song scraps were transformed into thrash rock and psychedelic country fusion. Echoing the observation that AI-assisted ports and mods are "ubiquitous but quickly forgotten, profound to some but boring to most," he argues this marks the arrival of an era of personal media.
