vLLM achieves near-zero-downtime scaling with Elastic Expert Parallelism
vLLM Blog · rss · 2026-10-19
The vLLM team details how Elastic Expert Parallelism now scales up and down with near-zero downtime, thanks to two key designs:
- Asynchronous preparation: weights and resources are prepared before traffic switchover, so new instances take over without interrupting service;
- NIXL EP: efficient weight transfer and migration for expert parallelism via NIXL.
For teams running large-scale MoE inference, this means elastically adjusting EP capacity with load while preserving availability, improving utilization and cost efficiency.
