DHS orders federal civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek and third-party products built on it

Per Andrew Curran, citing a Federal Register document screenshot, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has issued an order excluding IT products and services from Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd and affiliated entities from federal civilian procurement, and requiring all civilian federal agencies to remove all DeepSeek and DeepSeek-affiliate products — including third-party products and services developed using DeepSeek implementations — from their IT systems and stop purchasing them.
The notice (Docket No. DHS-2026-0628) is scheduled for publication in the Federal Register on October 20, 2026. It is one of the broadest exclusionary actions taken by the U.S. government against a Chinese AI model provider, extending to any third-party service built on DeepSeek.
