26,811-pupil study: AI lifts homework scores in China but hurts exam performance

Citing the June 2026 preprint "The generative AI learning penalty" (D. Strömberg et al.), Economist charts covering 26,811 Chinese pupils aged 12-18 show a sharp contrast: pupils using AI score far higher on homework (distribution shifted to 110-125 vs 100 baseline), but at exam time their scores drop below both non-AI peers and their own pre-AI levels — generative AI inflates homework performance while imposing a real learning penalty.
