Codex Windows app crashes fatally 6x in 20h, leaves no minidumps
photon808 · ghdev · 2026-10-18
A detailed issue in openai/codex reports the Windows desktop app's main (browser) process crashing fatally six times in 20 hours across two consecutive builds (26.1013.3656 and 26.1013.4894), indicating it's not a regression unique to the newest release.
- Each crash wiped the entire process tree (ChatGPT.exe + codex.exe backend + children) within seconds, with no shutdown logging and zero Windows Error Reporting records
- Local Crashpad metadata captured each crash as ptype:"browser", but no minidumps were retained — only 60-byte sidecar files remain
- Environment: Windows 11 x64, 16GB RAM with a fixed 6.5GB pagefile; the bundled codex.exe drives long agent sessions via stdio
- The reporter aligns six sidecar timestamps with backend logs and container teardown events; three crashes were user-visible
The author argues this is distinct from, though possibly related to, the renderer crash loop reported in #54912/#54920/#55037 on the same build.
