Late Interaction in 2026: Experiment Shows Single-Vector Search Ranks Wrong Answers Higher
IgorCarron · x · 2026-10-20
At the Future of AI Search event, Amélie Chatelain presented Late Interaction in 2026. A demo with granite-embedding-small-english-r2 shows dense single-vector retrieval compressing all relevance clues (protocol, status code, function name) into one vector: swapping any single clue (429→503, OAuth→SAML, refresh→revoke, backoff→timeout) yields cosine similarity (0.943–0.970) higher than the query's own correct paraphrase (0.949) — wrong answers outrank the right one, motivating multi-vector Late Interaction approaches.
