Luke Wroblewski charts 18 years of iOS calculator design evolution
LukeW · x · 2026-10-19
Designer Luke Wroblewski published an infographic tracing the iOS calculator from iOS 1 to iOS 27.
- iOS 1–4: skeuomorphic rounded buttons, two icon tweaks
- iOS 7: flat redesign with square keys and orange operator buttons
- iOS 11–18: return to circular keys, followed by a decade of visual consistency
- iOS 26–27: a 'visual refinement' pass on the same skeleton
He notes that since circling back to rounded buttons 10 years ago, the calculator's core design has stayed remarkably stable, with only detail-level iteration since.
