PM coach: product sense interviews grade your path, not your idea
aakashgupta · x · 2026-10-19
Product coach Aakash Gupta, who has coached hundreds of PM candidates, says the most common product sense prep mistake is chasing brilliant ideas when interviewers actually grade the path. The round appears at Google, Meta and AI labs like OpenAI.
- Rubric: prioritization, user empathy, structured thinking, creativity, judgment under ambiguity, metrics fluency.
- Narrowing funnel: pick one segment and defend it out loud, rank pains by severity × frequency, commit to one solution and name its trade-off, attach a success metric plus a counter metric. Deliberately cutting scope is the strongest signal.
- All three question types: design questions punish jumping to features early; improvement questions punish idea lists not tied to a business objective; favorite-product questions reward one sharp flaw over five compliments.
- Drill: one timed, out-loud question per day before your loop.
