My agent's tests were always green — so I started deleting random lines to catch the theater
Kodenstudio · reddit · 2026-10-19
A developer realized that after letting his agent write its own tests, they always passed — and he'd stopped reading them entirely. His fix: manual mutation testing. Delete a random line, flip a boolean, run the suite; if tests still pass, they're theater.
Key points:
- No mutation framework or CI job — a quick local script taking ten seconds filters out tests written to pass rather than to check anything
- The other half is ordering: test first, human reviews it, then the agent writes the implementation — slow and annoying, but the only thing that stopped "done" from losing meaning
He asks how others handle it: review the test before the code, or catch it later?
