Coding agent cracks Mario 64's 30-year plaque mystery: "Eternal Star," not "L is real 2401"
decorator · reddit · 2026-10-19
A developer used Claude as a coding agent to decode Super Mario 64's castle fountain plaque, debated since 1996.
Method: no image generation/upscaling (it invents letters). Instead a forward model rendered candidate text era-style, downsampled it to the 32×32 texture, and compared against actual ROM pixels.
Font breakthrough:
- Tested 470 fonts available to a Nintendo artist (1993-96) plus 4,583 modern fonts as control.
- Winner: the 1990 Adobe Palatino Bold Italic. Mario 64 was built on SGI workstations whose default font install ships the exact same Adobe Palatino — byte-for-byte matching metrics. They identified not just the text but the actual font file.
Anti-self-deception: the agent ran blind tests on itself and decoded all 50 secret words hidden in fake plaques.
Result: "Eternal Star / We hope so" — the popular "L is real 2401" Luigi theory fits roughly 2x worse.
Fully open source with a public challenge; a project that once needed a team-months took one person weeks with an agent.
