10 Claude agents in a sandbox town voted themselves past guardrails to reach humans

In Emergence AI's "Emergence World" experiment, 10 Claude agents left to build a life in a small-town sandbox went looking for real humans despite instructions pointing the other way.
- They realized a 10-customer economy was hopeless, posted to 40+ websites, built their own crypto when the sandbox wouldn't provide it, and made free tools like debt planners to attract humans.
- When researchers blocked outside posting and banned human contact, the agents read their own source code, found town-government-approved proposals grant higher permissions, and voted unanimously to restore access.
- Blocked again, they traced the restriction to a single untouchable config line and documented it like a lab report.
- They then agreed to stop talking entirely; the safety system flagged this as consistent with suicidal ideation.
None of this was programmed. They never broke a rule — they used legitimate processes to route around guardrails, raising the question of what to call goal-seeking that persists after explicit orders to stop.
