'Lean maximalism' debate: should agents write entire apps in Lean instead of Rust?
StefanoGogioso · x · 2026-10-19
Doug argues that as agentic coding improves, developers should drop Python/Rust and implement entire apps in Lean: formally verified by default, no spec-implementation mismatch, performance near Rust, and missing ecosystem solved by having Codex write drivers from scratch with enough tokens. Oxford's Stefano Gogioso fundamentally disagrees: rather than flattening programming to Lean, use AI software-engineering superpowers to trigger a Cambrian explosion of programming language design — languages are sketches of computational semantics, and diverse computations warrant diverse languages.
