BELIEFWEAVER: belief updates and world modeling for long-horizon agent failure recovery
IntelligenceLab · hf · 2026-10-19
Researchers from University of Maryland, Google, and MBZUAI introduce BELIEFWEAVER, tackling a core long-horizon agent problem: failures whose causes lie several steps earlier, beyond what local reflection or backtracking can resolve.
Key ideas:
- Maintains a relational belief state across attempts, observations, and checkpoints, persisting execution evidence
- Execution evidence updates frontier priorities across attempts and supports rollback, while diagnostics propose testable repair hypotheses
- Combines persistent evidence with prospective reasoning over repair directions (world modeling) instead of blind retries
- Distills the recovery reasoning into a smaller model for cheaper deployment
The core framing: agents should revise earlier assumptions in light of new evidence, then apply what they learn to subsequent exploration.
