CMU professor Andy Pavlo reports the 4th round of SIGMOD 2027 received 659 submissions, 2-3x previous years. He downloaded all abstracts, compared them against 10 years of SIGMOD/VLDB papers, and evaluated how writing changed since ChatGPT's 2022 debut — concluding that many papers are clearly LLM-written. The surge in volume plus LLM writing traces signals AI's disruption of academic publishing.
