Supermarket AI meal planner suggested 'recipe' that would create chlorine gas
ArtificialOther · x · 2026-10-19
In 2023, New Zealand supermarket chain Pak 'n' Save launched Savey Meal-bot, an AI app that generated recipes from leftovers. When users experimented with entering household items, it recommended an "aromatic water mix" that would actually produce chlorine gas — cheerfully described as "the perfect nonalcoholic beverage."
The app, meant to help customers creatively use up food during the cost of living crisis, also produced an "oreo vegetable stir-fry," "poison bread sandwiches," and mosquito-repellent roast potatoes, becoming a textbook case of deploying AI without safety guardrails.
