One Claude Code prompt de-bloats smart TVs, racking up 2M views in two days

A user on X fed Claude Code a screenshot of his smart TV's Amazon listing and asked "can you hack this?" Within a day the ads, bloatware and lag were gone, with his screensaver replaced by a live revenue dashboard. The tweet hit 2M+ views, with many followers reporting success.

The actual technique is a decade old: enable developer mode, connect via ADB, disable preinstalled packages, swap in a clean launcher, shorten animations — no root or flashing needed. The article includes AI engineer Mert Cobanov's full prompt, whose key constraints are: only pm disable-user (fully reversible), no root/bootloader unlock (protects Widevine L1/Netflix), measure before and after, disable at most 10 packages per batch with testing between batches, and a do-not-touch list covering input switching, remote control, Play Services and the launcher.

Why TVs are full of junk: hardware loses money — 87% of Roku's $4.74B 2025 revenue came from ads and revenue share, with -14% hardware gross margin; Vizio's ACR (automatic content recognition) data profits exceeded TV sales as early as 2021, and Texas sued Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense and TCL over ACR in Dec 2025. The author frames this as an "ignorance tax" hidden between "what's possible" and "what users know how to do" — a gap AI is now closing, echoing the dev who had Claude write a native macOS driver for a Windows-only printer. Expect vendors to lock things down tighter in response.
