If Claude were etched into silicon itself, I'd be far likelier to believe it's conscious

Syd Steyerhart argues that consciousness debates about LLMs overlook a key distinction: nobody separates an LLM simulated in a GPU's computational space from one physically etched into silicon. His personal bar: show him an ASIC where Claude is the circuitry, and he'd be far more inclined to believe it's conscious — and an analog implementation would raise those odds another 5x. A concrete, testable criterion for the perennial question of whether consciousness depends on physical realization.
