Casado's "network effects" claim for AI challenged: it's economies of scale, not networks
danielrock · x · 2026-10-19
Martin Casado argued "network effects" is the most abused term in business: true network effects lower marginal cost of adding users relative to a smaller competitor (telcos being the classic case), while self-reinforcing data value grows sublinearly, leaving leaders disadvantaged vs challengers. Andrey Fradkin pushed back: declining costs as user base (total output) grows are economies of scale, not network effects — which require user value to depend on other users. Diminishing returns to data don't imply large firms are disadvantaged (cf. Google vs Bing). Daniel Rock amplified the exchange.
