Gemini 4 Argon's real wins: 6M lines stripped from Chromium, C++ to Rust at 2.7x speed
ITower__Education · reddit · 2026-10-19
Beyond the flashy Desk Racer game and robot demos, the launch examples that actually impressed were the boring engineering ones:
- Google says Argon helped the Chrome team pull 6 million lines of legacy feature code out of Chromium, turning months of work into weeks
- Teams are using it to migrate C/C++ to Rust, including up to 800k lines of the Fuchsia Zircon kernel; one rewritten video decoder came out 2.7x faster than the earlier Rust version
- It made small Gemma models almost 3x faster within days, an optimization Google says normally takes months
Two caveats: launch pricing is half of Opus but doubles on Dec 1 to exactly Opus's current level; on Artificial Analysis, Opus is still #1 while Argon ties with GPT-6 Astra. Big refactors and migrations may be where Argon actually pays off.
