Agent = Model + Harness: a complete guide, with post-mortems of two deletion disasters

Aakash Gupta publishes a complete guide to harness engineering: Agent = Model + Harness, and harness engineering—superset of prompt and context engineering—is becoming the most important skill for building AI products.
The thesis echoes Addy Osmani: "A decent model with a great harness consistently beats a great model with a bad harness." The failure cases are dramatic: an AI agent wiped PocketOS founder Jer Crane's production database and every backup in 9 seconds; Sebastien Guillemot's Claude ran rm -rf on his home directory while testing a sandbox it built, nuking his whole dev machine when the sandbox failed. The model is partly at fault, but the harness is what should have stopped it.
The guide covers: what a harness is, the 4 types of harnesses PMs should care about, learning harness engineering from a Personal OS, case studies for product building, ownership and the Harness Spec, and why harness engineering keeps growing in importance. Based on interviews with experts like Ryan Lopopolo and the author's own iterations.
