David Sacks: payback period is the North Star metric for AI infra — CoreWeave recaps in 2.5 years on 5-year deals
DavidSacks · x · 2026-10-19
On the All In podcast, David Sacks argued that payback period should be the North Star metric for AI infrastructure investing:
- CoreWeave's typical five-year deals pay back in about 2.5 years; SpaceX recaps in roughly one year, monetizing $50B per gigawatt versus CoreWeave's $20B per gigawatt.
- The key difference is pricing structure: SpaceX effectively gets spot pricing on 90-day cancelable deals, while CoreWeave locked in five-year contracts at older prices just as spot compute prices surged on scarcity and demand.
- As long as payback stays short, the economics are nearly unlosable and debt rolls fast. The warning signal is payback stretching out, implying softening demand, falling spot prices, or execution delays.
