Open-source Pixel Pass turns photos into pixel art, built via Claude Code workflow
Rafilondon · reddit · 2026-10-18
A developer shares Pixel Pass, a free, open-source pixel art converter that runs entirely in the browser on desktop and mobile, with custom presets. It produces a real low-res grid with small palettes (picked from the image, or PICO-8/Game Boy presets) and dithers only where the picture is smooth.
Built with Claude Code: it started as a Python script in the author's game art pipeline, which Claude Code ported to a single-file HTML/JS app, verified pixel-identical against the Python version via Node. The author tested and described visual bugs (dark portraits losing color, flat shadowed faces, duplicated previews), Claude Code found and fixed causes, self-tested in its own browser and the author's Android emulator, and scripted the preview image generation.
