Safari Caps Incognito and Low-Power Mode at 30fps — Found via AI-Assisted Bench Bisect
oykun · x · 2026-10-18
Developer oykun discovered while optimizing his portfolio site that Safari's incognito and battery-saver modes cap page frame rate at 30fps—even on a blank page—making WebGL lags behind native 120Hz scrolling.
- Built a frame-rate test page with Claude (Opus 5.5 High), having the agent read the screen and run bench bisects to isolate the cause
- The same page hits 60fps in a normal (non-private, plugged-in) Safari window, confirming the cap comes from incognito/battery modes
- Workaround: detect non-normal Safari windows and rebuild animations with CSS scroll-driven animations instead of WebGL, so they stay in sync without JavaScript
Screenshots show the full AI-assisted debugging session with fps/p95 numbers per scenario.
