Gary Marcus amplifies criticism: Anthropic-backed bill would make it harder for courts to halt risky AI development
GaryMarcus · x · 2026-10-18
Gary Marcus retweeted two sharp critiques of the federal AI bill backed by Anthropic:
- @So8res argues the proposed law would make it even harder than it already is for a court to block or restrict the development of an AI that threatens all humanity.
- AI policy researcher Nathan Calvin said he was "viscerally angry" reading the bill: while some parts are sensible, overall it falls far short of meeting the moment and would leave the US less protected against catastrophic risks than under existing law. He singled out the preemption provisions as remarkably far-reaching — overriding state legislation like SB 53 and stripping state courts of their general powers to enjoin defendants and protect the public.
It's the latest heated clash in the AI safety community over the federal-preemption approach to AI regulation.
