"$400/Month Can't Buy $40k of API Forever": Team Benchmarks Open Models as Fallback
ChrisRackauckas · x · 2026-10-18
Chris Rackauckas explains why his team benchmarks open models for coding: their agent workflow would cost $40k/month at API pricing versus a few hundred dollars in subscriptions — "it's not clear how long these frontier models will give you $40k/month in API calls for $400/month," which he calls unsustainable.
Part of the open-model evals is finding slots where cheaper models can substitute, to future-proof the stack against upcoming price hikes or usage caps.
