Tim Sweeney: AI now handles the 70% of rote coding from my Unreal Engine 1 days
TimSweeneyEpic · x · 2026-10-18
Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney recalls that building Unreal Engine 1 split his time 30% deep coding (assembly texture mappers, BSP trees, networking) and 70% mechanical typing and refactoring — essentially yesterday's vibe coding. AI has now taken over that 70% to his satisfaction, and he's more surprised it acts as an "insta-Carmack" solving hard technical problems and reasoning directly over raw 3D data files. He draws an analogy to abandoning assembly for C/C++ in 1998: if prompting via architecture docs and design plans transcends typing code, developers move to higher-value technical and creative work. What matters, he says, is the end product.
