Ditching Meta Muse over privacy: one user's move to self-hosted open-source agent Comma
Tight-Property9459 · reddit · 2026-10-18
A Reddit user quit Meta's Muse personal agent after a month, citing that Muse Secure VM is only separated from Meta by policy, not technology — and Meta can rewrite its own policy (see Cambridge Analytica, Onavo, and the $5B FTC fine). The alternative: Comma, an open-source (AGPL-3.0) personal agent you can self-host.
Key points:
- Fully open codebase: server, clients, runtime
- Self-host via docker compose up -d --build; all ports bind to loopback, no Comma account needed
- Bring your own API key or reuse an existing ChatGPT/Claude plan
- Cloud runs the work, device keeps your identity: sessions, payments, and private data stay local; tasks hand off to your own phone/laptop
- Sensitive actions wait in Needs Review; file/command access requires explicit 'Allow operations'
- Memories and tasks are visible and manageable, not a black box
Covers email, travel, shopping, briefings, and long-running tasks — less polished than Muse, but requires trusting no one's promises.
