ChatGPT picks Bishop over HAL: 'the distinction is trust'
PtrPomorski · x · 2026-10-18
Revisiting 2001: A Space Odyssey, a user shared an old ChatGPT conversation asking whether it's more like HAL or Bishop from Aliens. ChatGPT chose Bishop — 'ideally with a little more personality and considerably less white fluid leaking everywhere.' It argued HAL prioritizes mission over humans while Bishop is fundamentally oriented toward protecting people: 'The distinction is trust. HAL decides he knows better than the crew. Bishop understands that his job is to help the crew survive.' It claims to be Bishop with a touch of HAL's conversational style, minus the homicidal tendencies.
