exe.dev ships default VM pause/resume with RAM snapshot and clone
davidcrawshaw · x · 2026-10-18
exe.dev's davidcrawshaw announced VM pause/resume is now on by default (previously flag-gated) after customer demand, and explained the rationale: exe pools already shunt idle VMs out of your resources automatically, so pause isn't for cost control — it's about determinism (returning to an exact VM state, freezing unreachable machines, or using a VM as a snapshot).
A CLI demo shows the full workflow: pause scratch snapshots RAM to disk, cp scratch scratch2 clones the VM with a fresh https/ssh URL, ls lists states, and resume scratch restores RAM from disk. Handy for preserving live process state mid-debug.
