Stanford's Next-Concept Modeling generates text 10-31x faster than diffusion baselines
TheTuringPost · x · 2026-10-18
Stanford and Together AI propose Next-Concept Modeling (NCM), a third paradigm beyond autoregressive and diffusion text generation. A multiscale residual VQ-VAE encodes text into a hierarchy of discrete codes; a transformer then generates codes coarse-to-fine, predicting each level in parallel. NCM runs 10–31x faster than the strongest diffusion baselines with comparable or better quality, beats AR/diffusion on Sudoku with fewer evaluations, and trains on 4–5x fewer tokens. Caveats: small models, specific benchmarks; LLM-scale comparisons not yet established. Paper from Christopher Ré's group; code on GitHub (HazyResearch/ncm).
