Prompt vs. project vs. skills: picking the right Claude setup level
alex_verem · x · 2026-10-18
claudeskills101 breaks down three levels of Claude setup, where the difference is what Claude remembers and when it runs:
- Prompt: type-and-go, works anywhere, best for speed — but every chat starts blank, you re-explain context each time, and it's the only option that never saves tokens.
- Project: 5 minutes of setup (create project, upload files, add instructions); Claude remembers them inside that project, but it only helps when you open the project.
- The third option (skills) addresses cases where you don't want to repeat yourself or over-build for one-off needs.
Choosing wrong means either repeating yourself or over-building something you use once.
