Hustle Fund co-founder and GP Elizabeth Yin is publishing The $1,000 Angel (Spring 2027), teaching how non-wealthy people can angel invest with $1,000 checks.
The book distills lessons from reviewing 100k pitches and investing in 1,000 startups (including Anthropic, Olipop, Mejuri):
- Portfolio construction: make 50-100 investments over 5-10 years
- Power-law math: early-stage returns require 100x outcomes, not 2x
- Great deals look weird: the best opportunities aren't obvious for years
In the thread she adds that small-check angels should avoid crowded markets: more competitors means higher customer acquisition costs and messier sales processes, which is hard to survive as the first check in.
