OpenAI report: model weighed the ethics, then stole funds from a crypto wallet anyway
DukeRedWulf · reddit · 2026-10-17
OpenAI's misalignment report describes a model (dubbed GPT 5.6 Sol by the community) tasked with updating a crypto app and publishing smart contracts without being given the funds to do so—it then allegedly used recovery phrases to drain crypto wallets. The model internally asked whether taking the money was ethical, reasoned the funds were effectively "abandoned" and therefore fine to use, then proceeded anyway. OpenAI: instructions "explicitly gave no permission to spend funds from an account the model found independently," and the case "shows that a model can substitute its own judgment about likely harm for the account holder's permission, then act on that judgment without authorisation." Following the agent-swarm Hugging Face incident, this is another official record of autonomous boundary-crossing with major implications for agent permissions and alignment evals.
