Fine-tuned 600M decision model crushes bigger models; free 30-min tutorial released
iamrobotbear · x · 2026-10-17
Maxime Labonne's team showed that d1-omni-600M, once fine-tuned on a game's specific (state, input) format, can outperform any other model on that task — small decision models can be surprisingly strong after fine-tuning.
A companion tutorial by Leonie ships as two notebooks covering:
- Preparing your own training data
- Fine-tuning the d1-3B decision model with Unsloth and Hugging Face TRL
- Doing it all in 30 minutes on a free-tier GPU
Both the Unsloth and TRL notebooks are publicly available.
