Dean Ball: Hayek's spontaneous-order ideas are strikingly relevant to AI, yet his heirs peddle AI cope
deanwball · x · 2026-10-17
AI policy researcher Dean Ball laments that Hayek's writings on spontaneous orders are shockingly relevant to AI and should push people to take the "AI as abnormal technology" framing seriously. Yet Hayek's most direct intellectual heirs, he argues, spend their time purveying "cope-laden, first-stage-of-grief" takes on AI out of loyalty to American megacorp lobbyist talking points. Quoting HamandCheese, he echoes the claim that the Koch-orbit libertarian movement's enduring legacy may end up being the unrestricted proliferation of vastly superhuman machine intelligence, as its ideological progeny "mode collapsed" into low-dimensional caricatures of brilliant classical liberal thinkers.
