JR West to deploy giant humanoid robots this fall, cutting high-altitude rail crews by 30%

JR West is putting two giant humanoid robots into service this fall for railway maintenance, aiming to cut crew size on dangerous high-altitude tasks by about 30%.
- Single-arm unit: rides a 15 m aerial boom, lifts up to 120 kg of wire fittings; the humanoid upper body weighs 300 kg, is 1.5 m wide, and is teleoperated from the truck cab via camera feeds.
- Dual-arm unit: swappable end effectors—chainsaw for tree cutting, paint tool for coating structures, and a gripper—so one machine covers multiple jobs. First unit ran in 2024; this is a lighter production version.
It takes workers off the pole and drops tree-clearing teams from four to three. Limitations remain: it's pure teleoperation, constrained by which tools are ready and how long swaps take. Developed in 2022 by Jinki Ittai and Nippon Signal; a heavier version has been deployed since August 2024 for pruning, power line inspection, and painting.
