Real-Time Hair Rendering: 100 Characters, 100K Strands Each, Just 1.7 MB
TinfoilTricorn · x · 2026-10-17
Cem Yuksel's team at the University of Utah unveiled a real-time hair rendering breakthrough:
- 100 characters, each with 100K unique hair strands, rasterized in just 2 ms on an RTX 4090 with 8x MSAA
- All 100 hair models fit in only 1.7 MB total (13–21 KB each), slashing storage and memory bandwidth by orders of magnitude
- The approach combines strand meshes with LOD and generates geometry on the fly via mesh shaders, replacing hair cards and textures
