Quant Level Beats Decode Speed: 12-Task Benchmark of Qwen Flash Next Quants and Temperature
Dreeew84 · reddit · 2026-10-17
A Reddit user benchmarked Qwen3.8 Flash Next on local hardware across 12 tasks, comparing q3xxs/q3s/q4xs quants against official sampling params (temp 1) vs temp 0, 3 runs each, building an in-browser Tetris game and scoring delivered features.
Key findings:
- All quants were acceptable; no perfect run, and higher quants showed no quality gain
- Lower quants 'trust themselves less': longer thinking, more tool calls and re-tests, driving total decode up to 80+ Ktok per task vs 20-30 Ktok for higher quants
- Faster decode on low quants (45-55 tok/s) does not compensate — total task time is still longer
- Temp 0 shows lower variance and possibly slightly faster tasks with no quality hit yet, but the sample is too small
Advice: run the highest quant your hardware affords and optimize for task time, not decode speed. The author settles on q3s.
