Microsoft completes pre-training of MAI-Base-2: 2.8T-param MoE, 4-12x more FLOPs-efficient than DeepSeek-V4-Pro-Base

Microsoft AI announced in an official blog post that it has finished pre-training MAI-Base-2, its next frontier foundation model:
- Architecture: an MoE model with 2.8 trillion total parameters and 80 billion active parameters.
- Results: outperforms every open-weight model tested on Microsoft's held-out evaluations, and is 4-12x more pre-training FLOPs-efficient than the strongest open base model, DeepSeek-V4-Pro-Base — savings reinvested into training a larger model.
- Context: follows June's MAI-Thinking-1, a reasoning model post-trained on MAI-Base-1. The team frames it as "every model is a dry run for the next one; scaling takes ambition and patience."
