Dev adds MCP server to a dance directory, shares Claude vs ChatGPT vs Grok testing notes

The operator of CI Treasure Hunt, a hand-curated Contact Improvisation dance directory, added a read-only MCP server (8 tools, Next.js + mcp-handler + Supabase) so AI assistants stop giving outdated answers about events scattered across Telegram/WhatsApp/Facebook. Testing across three clients yielded useful findings:
- Claude: approved in the connector directory within minutes; only requires annotations.title on each tool, top-level title isn't enough
- ChatGPT: invoked tools but invented 404 URLs on the author's domain and pulled unrelated web images; fixed by adding explicit URLs to results and instructing the client to only use tool-returned links
- Grok: kept using web search instead of the connector unless explicitly told, while Claude and ChatGPT invoked it unprompted
- Unexpected pitfall: the host's bot protection returned 429s to MCP clients including the registry verifier
The author logs tool calls, arguments, and result counts; empty search results help discover uncovered cities with demand. Next step: write access so agents can submit events for review, considering OAuth and spam handling.
