Apple research: a 7B model with 8 retries matches a 32B model using 4x less memory

Tomer Galanti shares his Apple research internship result (paper: 'Fewer Bits, More Tries'): running a compressed small model multiple times and selecting among candidates can recover most capability lost to compression. A 7B Qwen model with 8 parallel attempts matches or beats a 32B model across 4 code-generation benchmarks, using 4x less memory and running up to 6x faster. The key insight: one-shot accuracy drops sharply with size, but candidate coverage barely does, so verified retries trade test-time compute for accuracy at modest latency cost.
