The AI industry has a truth problem: spin and hype exceed any prior tech wave
DavidLinthicum · x · 2026-10-17
Veteran enterprise tech author David Linthicum argues AI misinformation now exceeds any wave he's lived through — cloud, SOA, client/server. Common false claims he calls out:
- "Agentic AI is always cheaper" — not true
- "AI will replace 50% of employees" — only in narrow cases
- "Every company needs its own private LLM" — usually false
He admits spin has always been part of tech salesmanship (and he took part), but the volume of selective benchmarking, exaggerated ROI claims and outright lying in AI is unprecedented — an industry-wide "truth problem."
