Using real-time AI voice translation on Tokyo streets: the barrier is gone
perilli · x · 2026-10-17
IDC analyst perilli spent a business trip in Tokyo using real-time, bidirectional AI voice translation everywhere—placing his phone between himself and locals in museums, shops, and restaurants, letting the AI act as a professional interpreter between English and Japanese.
His observations: even Japanese professionals who regularly deal with foreigners were amazed, then started asking which app he used, whether it was a paid plan, and which languages it supports—realizing the new opportunities. For the first time he could have long conversations with people he could never have interacted with before. Of everything generative AI has given us, he writes, real-time synthetic voice is a gift whose value can't be measured.
