Open-Weights Frontier Gap Narrows to Under 3 Months as DS-Flash Beats GPT-6.1 Sol
teortaxesTex · x · 2026-10-17
teortaxesTex analyzes the DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 gap to the frontier: DS-Flash now beats GPT-6.1 Sol on new benchmarks, and since Sol shipped July 9, 2026, the open-weights lag to OpenAI's public frontier is under 3 months.
He adds two caveats: OpenAI's Astra already existed before Sol, and catching up to the tail end of those 3 months — closer to the internal frontier — will be harder. Open weights are closing in on the public frontier, but a real gap remains.
